Dear WES Families:
On behalf of the staff of Waterford Elementary School, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year. This year, the staff at WES is working on a number of initiatives that will assist your students in becoming well-rounded children. Additionally, the staff at WES are committed to providing your children with a nurturing environment where students are engaged in learning activities that are challenging and of high interest.
One of our areas of focus this year is providing all children with targeted services in ELA and Mathematics while continuing to examine and revise our instructional practice. It is imperative that all students’ needs are met regardless of whether they excel, struggle, or are on par with the developmental norm.
In an effort to decrease student discipline infractions and increase student performance within the school environment, the staff at WES has implemented a researched-based program known as School-wide Positive Behavioral Supports. With SWPBIS, students are systematically taught the behavioral expectations in every setting within the school environment. Staff members then reinforce student behavior throughout the school day with Wildcat Tickets. Students are provided with incentives for consistently making positive behavior choices.
Another area that we are making strides to improve involves students taking charge of their learning. Most of the teachers at WES have been trained in LATIC (Learner-Active Technology-Infused Classroom). LATIC is a framework that allows teachers to build lessons and units that place the child in charge of his or her learning. Research suggests that when students are engaged in the learning process, invested in the content, and provided choices, achievement and learning are maximized.
As the year progresses, I encourage you to take an active role in the learning process. Please be sure to reach out to your child’s teacher early and often. Our teachers want the best for your children, and they are willing to work with you as a partner in your child’s education. We wish everyone a happy, healthy, and successful 2017-2018 school year!
Patrick Davidson, Principal
